WICHITA FALLS — Cameron’s Lavell Brodnex hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds remaining to cap a gallant comeback from 13 points down as the Aggies edged Midwestern, 88-87, in a dandy Lone Star Conference battle at D.L. Ligon Coliseum Monday.
The Aggies found themselves down by 13 at 75-62 with 8:24 remaining before they found a way to get enough big defensive stops and some big buckets to grab the win to climb to 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference and finish the first semester at 7-3 overall.
Earlier the Cameron women had a poor shooting performance from long range and wound up losing a 68-56 setback to fall to 1-4 in the Lone Star Conference and 3-8 overall.
Both Cameron teams will take a break for the holidays and return to action Jan. 4 when Lubbock Christian comes to Lawton for a LSC doubleheader.
Men have big rally
With the defense getting some stops, the Aggies started to really close the deficit when Jaylan Thomas drilled a trey with 6:19 remaining to cut the deficit to six, 77-71.
Thomas added two more on free throws at the 5:19 mark to make it 77-74 and then the senior guard tied the game with a trey with 4:36 remaining. He wasn’t done just yet, adding a layup with 4:09 remaining to put the Aggies in front, 79-77.
Then he really quieted the Mustangs’ fans with another trey for an 86-84 CU lead with 1:23 to go.
After that it was the late Brodnex free throws and two strong defensive possessions that allowed the Aggies to escape with the clutch road win over CU’s arch rival.
Thomas led the Aggies with 24 and Brodnex added 20 but they had plenty of help as Daylon Andrews added 18 and Reggie Prudomme 12.
CU women struggle
For the past six or seven seasons the Aggie women were almost always near the top in 3-point shooting in the LSC but Monday Jeff Mahoney’s club shot a miserable 1-of-11 from long range while the Mustangs hit a sizzling 10-of-18 for 55.6 percent to spark the victory.
Cameron also struggled with turnovers, giving up possession 15 times which the Mustangs turned into 27 points.
And the Aggies also continued to get little production from the bench as this time CU got five points from six reserves who played in the game.
Katie King led the Aggies with 18 and Korie Allensworth added 17. Shamica Smith chipped in eight more but after that there was little production from the rest of the team.
