Cameron men outscored UT-Tyler, 12-7, in overtime Thursday to lift the Aggies to a 91-86 victory in the Lone Star Conference opener for both clubs.
The Aggies hit 28-of-36 from the free throw line to help them turn aside the Patriots as they moved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the LSC. Then CU men host Dallas Baptist Saturday at 3 p.m.
CU men got excellent balance as Lavell Bordnex scored 19, Jaylan Thomas added 17 and Andre Washington chipped in 15. CU led for all but 3:49 as they held the Patriots at bay with a solid defensive effort.
In the first game the Cameron women usually find a way to win games from long range but Thursday the University of Texas-Tyler gave the Aggies a taste of their own medicine by hitting 12-of-34 shots from long range enroute to a 68-47 victory in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
The CU women fell behind in the early going and were never able to get back even the rest of the way as the Texas crew used their long-range edge and some solid free throw shooting to keep the Aggies from getting close.
Cameron hit just 6-of-20 from long range and lost the free throw battle, 10-of-12 to 1-of-3 for the home team. Another huge statistic had the Patriots with a 40-10 edge in bench points.
The Aggies were led by Korie Allensworth with 15 and Katie King with 11 and they were the only Aggies to reach double figures.
The CU women will regroup and host Texas Woman’s University Saturday at 1 p.m.
