Shamika Smith was able to convert a fast-break layup off an assist from Kenny Cummings to help Cameron University’s women’s basketball team take a 69-65 Lone Star Conference victory over Oklahoma Christian Thursday in the Aggie Gym.
The CU men didn’t have much trouble, crushing the Eagles, 103-70, totally dominating the Edmond crew. Kevin O’Connor’s Aggies built a 52-32 halftime lead and never looked back to finish the season with an 11-16 overall record and an 8-13 LSC mark
Both CU teams closed the season with the sweep at home.
Late surge saves women
The Eagles owned a 65-62 lead with 2:25 left in the game but Cummings worked inside for a layup with 55 seconds left and she drew defensive contact and completed the free throw to even the score.
OC missed a layup at the other end and that’s when Smith got her important bucket to push the Aggies out in front. Then Cummings iced it away with two free throws with 24 seconds remaining and the Eagles failed to get off a shot after that.
The CU women climbed to 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the Lone Star Conference. After a slow start Jeff Mahoney’s crew has now won six of their last seven games.
Smith led the attack with 17 points while Cummings and Madison Griggs each chipped in 15.
Men dominate OC
Aaron Jacob led the balanced Aggie scoring with 30 points but Lavell Brodnex was right behind with 26. Plus, nine other Aggies scored in the game to help run the Eagles off the floor.
The Aggie men hit 42 of 74 shots for a sizzling 56.8 percent. They hit 8-of-26 from long range and added 11-of-13 shooting from the free throw line.
Cameron also dominated inside with 54 points in the paint and they dominated the boards as well to take the visitors out of the game early.
