Saturday was a good day for Cameron’s basketball teams as the women blew out Angelo State, 73-47, then the Aggies rallied for a 90-76 victory to earn an important Lone Star Conference sweep at the Aggie Gym.
The CU women ended their latest home stand with a decisive victory despite the team being plagued by injury. The Aggies suited up just nine players in Saturday’s victory.
The visiting Rams tried to use their larger numbers to wear down the Aggies. Throughout the first half Angelo State pressed the Aggies and hounded the ball causing Cameron to commit eight turnovers. Despite the pressure defense of the Rams the Aggies carried a one-point lead into halftime.
In the second half it was the Aggies who put on the pressure. A mixture of full court and half court pressure had the visitors from Angelo State flustered. Cameron forced their opponent to commit 32 total turnovers, 18 of which came in the second half. Cameron capitalized, and scored 32 points off of turnovers alone enroute to the victory.
Katie King led all scorers with 24 points and added six steals. Shamica Smith pulled down seven rebounds to go along with her 12 points.
The Aggies improve to 4-7 in the Lone Star Conference with the win, and 6-11 overall.
The CU men started their game against Angelo State strong. Cameron led the game through the first 10 minutes of play. The visiting Rams would come storming back in the final 10 minutes of the half and would go into the locker room leading by nine.
Angelo State would maintain a sizable lead through much of the second half. That is until Cameron found its shooting touch. The Aggies went on a 13-0 run to take the lead at the 9:00 minute mark. The teams traded buckets, and were tied at 70-70, before Daylon Andrews drained a three-pointer to give the Aggies the lead. Cameron would hit eight free-throws in the final minutes of the game to secure the victory as they would go on to win 90-76.
Jaylan Thomas had a big night for the Aggies, as he led all scorers with 30 points, including 6-of-7 from three-point range
The Cameron teams will travel to Edmond for their next contest as they take on Oklahoma Christian Thursday with the women playing at 5:30 and the men at 7:30.
