Cameron University’s men’s basketball team missed a golden opportunity to improve its position for the Lone Star Conference Tournament as the Aggies were unable to hold onto the lead in the final 15 minutes as Angelo State pulled out an 80-71 victory Thursday.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 11-7 and allowed Angelo State to pull into a tie with the Aggies with just four games remaining in the regular season. Cameron now heads to Odessa, Texas, for today’s game against the 9-9 Eagles. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.

Cameron can take a big step toward the No. 3 seed with a win on the road and they also have an edge considering Eastern New Mexico is 10-7 but has several tough division games remaining including a game today against Lubbock Christian which is currently second at 14-3 and locked into the No. 2 seed in the West.

The Aggies owned a one-point lead at the half Thursday but the hosts rallied and CU never regained the lead down the stretch.

Jaylen Thomas led the Aggies with 22 points and Reggie Prudhomme added 17.

Women struggle after half

The Cameron women were within range of the Rambelles at halftime but in the second half the Aggies were unable to sink shots and the hosts stretched the lead until the final buzzer.

Cameron shot just 22 percent from the field in the second half while the Rambelles drilled 54 percent to seal the outcome.

Korie Allensworth led the Aggies in scoring with 19 but the balance wasn’t there to keep CU in the game as they wound up losing, 88-52.

The CU women are now 7-11 in the West Division and their assignment today is a tough one as the Permian-Basin crew is leading the division with a 15-2 record and a 20-3 overall record. Lubbock Christian and Angelo State are tied for second with 12-5 marks and West Texas is fourth at 10-7.

Cameron is now 7-11 with two West Division games remaining, today’s game against UT-Permian Basin and then the regular-season finale against Midwestern on Feb. 29.
