Sports briefs

There never seems to be an easy game in the rugged Lone Star Conference basketball competition but this past week Cameron was able to pick up a sweep against Texas A&M-International on Thursday.

The Cameron women earned an 80-53 victory over the Dustdevils for their first LSC win of the season as graduation and injuries have left few veterans on the team.

Grace Alverson led the CU women with 19 points, sinking five treys. Shamica Smith recorded a double-double, producing 19 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting an efficient 7-for-12 from the field.

Kennedy Cummings also stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, 12 assists, and 6 rebounds, while also grabbing 4 steals to lead Cameron’s defense. Kloe Heidebrecht knocked down three three-pointers on her way to 13 points to give the Aggies good balance.

Better shooting was a key as the Aggies hit 11-of-35 from long range for 31.4 percent.

The Aggie men got the win by a 66-55 score against the Dustdevils behind scoring leadership from Miles Gurske with 19 points. Aaron Jacob added 14 points and Zaveion Okoh had support with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

CU struggled with shooting, hitting 36.7 percent from the field, 25 percent from long range and 60 percent shooting from the free throw line but the Aggies had a strong effort on the boards with 45 rebounds including 16 on the offensive end.

Saturday Texas A&M-Kingsville came to the Aggie Gym and took a sweep with the Javs earning a 75-64 decision and then the Kingsville women earned a 68-51 victory.

The CU men had another sub-par shooting effort, hitting 21-of-55 from the field for 38.2 percent, the Aggies hit 32.1 percent from long range (9-of-28), however, they did have a strong effort from the free throw line, making 13-of-17 for 76.5 percent.

Prudhomme, Jaxon Ingram and Jaden Juarez each scored 13 points and Jacob chipped in 11.

The CU teams hit the road this week as they drive to Austin, Texas, for a Thursday doubleheader against St. Edwards starting at 5:30 p.m. The CU men take an 8-15 overall mark and a 5-12 LSC record into the game while St. Edward’s men are 9-14 overall and 6-11 in the LSC.

The CU women will take a 3-18 overall record and a 1-16 LSC mark into Thursday’s game at St. Edward’s.

Against the Javs, Shamica Smith was the leader for the Aggies with a game-high 23 points. No other CU player was able to make double figures as the Javs’ defense was tough, shutting down the 3-point line where CU hit just 4-of-19 for 21.1 percent.
