When a program doesn’t have great size and depth, there is often a need to use players both ways but sometimes that’s just not possible.
Cache has been blessed with some big players in the past, several who have either played college ball of late and one who is on a college roster now.
Ruben Cable would love to follow them to the college ranks but right now the 6-0, 280-pound senior is limited to just offense with a should injury.
“Right now, I am not able to lift weights or play on both sides of the ball due to a labrum injury,” he said. “I hope to keep improving this season and have a chance to play in college.”
One thing offensive linemen can do is eat and Cable is no different.
“My favorite food is Los Tres (Amigos) but Friday night after we have a home game we all go to Whataburger,” Cable said. “My choice is their honey butter chicken biscuits.”
And just how many makes a good meal?
“On a normal night maybe three,” he said with a huge grin. “If it was a tougher game them maybe four.”
His favorite class actually follows along that same line of thought.
“My favorite class right now is culinary with Ms. Anderson,” he said. “She teaches us a bunch of basics to help us cook and she also throws in a good deal of nutrition tips. I’m not sure if that might be a career goal for me but it sure will help me learn basic life skills.”
As he said, his goal is to play college football but if that opportunity doesn’t come he still plans on attending college.
“I do want to attend college and if the football doesn’t work. I will stay in Oklahoma and work toward a career in business management or something along those lines,” he said.
While the Bulldogs did lose Kenneth Wermey who is on the OU roster, they are rather inexperienced and it’s been up to Head Coach Farron Griffin and offensive line coach Aubrey Mithlo to teach them the line technique and footwork.
“During the off-season we did a lot of things to improve including dance lines,” he said. “We would line up and count 1, 2, 3, and we all had to coordinate our feet to that count to learn the basic footwork offensive linemen need. I think our improvement from the first game to this last one was really amazing.’
This week the Bulldogs host Oklahoma City Southeast in a non-district game.
“We have this non-district game against Southeast and will get back into our district next week against Elk City. We know there are going to be good teams ahead so we need to take of business with this game, rest up and get ready for tougher games ahead.”
There will also be time Saturday for the Comanche Nation Fair where Cable and his friends and relatives will recognize their heritage.”
Monday the hard work will come in earnest with Elk City on the horizon.
“The problem we had earlier was that on plays we’d have 10 guys do their job and one might mess up and the entire play would fall apart. Last week against Woodward we played much better and didn’t make as many mistakes. That is the only way that we can develop consistency. Coach always tells us about using a sledge hammer or a jackhammer. You can get a few good blows with a sledge but you can do much more work with a constant jackhammer.”
He also credited his teammates for last week’s win.
“Tyler (quarterback Harbin) had a good line, our guys caught some good passes and the defense played really well,” he said. “We keep playing like that we can get to the playoffs which is the goal of this entire team.”
