One of two brothers accused of the April 23 shooting death of Donovan Moncree made his initial court appearance Wednesday. The second brother will make his court appearance today.
Jakievion Dreshawn Johnson, a.k.a., Lil Dunnie LOC, 23, of Lawton, made his initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in Comanche County District Court where he received felony charges of first-degree murder – deliberate intent and possession of a firearm after former felony conviction, records indicate. The murder charge is punishable by life in prison, life without parole or death.
The investigation began shortly after 9:30 p.m. April 23 when Moncree was found shot dead in the parking lot of the Bellaire Apartments, 622 SW Bishop. He had a fatal bullet wound to his forehead as well as other gunshot wounds. A witness identified Johnson and his brother, Derrick Lyles, as the shooters, the probable cause affidavit states.
Johnson came to the Lawton Police Department last Saturday afternoon to speak with investigators about the incident. He provided a detailed description of events but later changed his story, according to the affidavit. He said they’d been at the apartments visiting his uncle on April 23.
The brothers and two women left but later returned to retrieve one of the women’s wallet, according to Johnson. He said he and Lyles had their guns on them that day; he claimed to have a 9mm he kept inside a fanny pack, the affidavit states.
Johnson said that Moncree approached them while walking a dog in the parking lot and that he apologized to Lyles, saying “I’m sorry, bro, I thought that you were that ABG Snoopy (expletive) I almost had to pop the other day,” according to the affidavit. He said his brother and Moncree “dabbed it up” before Lyle said, “hold on, that’s me,” Lawton Police Detective Robert Meurant stated.
According to Johnson, Moncree began to “clutch,” meaning in this context to reach for a pistol police found in a holster of the dead man. He said Lyles pulled a gun from the front of his pants and shot Moncree before they got into their vehicle, according to the affidavit. Johnson told Meurant that Moncree was moving and “clutching,” so he got his gun from the fanny pack and fired three times into the man from about eight feet away.
Johnson said of the shooting: “So, I put him to sleep,” the affidavit states.
Johnson and Lyles were arrested.
Charging information was filed Wednesday for Lyles who, according to the District Attorney’s office, will make his initial appearance today in Comanche County District Court for a first-degree murder charge.
Johnson has a prior felony conviction in Comanche County from September 2023 for accessory to first-degree murder, records indicate. He admitted to being in the vehicle when Lavonte Lawler was shot and killed on April 17, 2021, in the parking lot of Garrett’s Landings Apartments, 1321 SW 27th. He received a 10-year sentence with all but the first 880 days to serve in the Comanche County Detention Center suspended. With credit for time served, he was released soon after his plea.
Held on $1 million bond, Johnson returns to court at 3 p.m. July 23 for his preliminary hearing conference.
