This season has not been a great experience for Lawton High School’s football team but there is still something dangling from those face-masks that is keeping the Wolverines motivated.
That lure enticing LHS to keep fighting is the chance to compete in the Class 6A (II) playoffs. Yes, the Wolverines are just 1-3 in District 6A(II)-2 but if they can get a couple of wins over the course of the next three weeks that might just be the reward for Junior Brock and LHS.
“We had 40 players on that last road trip,” Brock said of the road game at Deer Creek-Edmond. “This week we have Choctaw which came close to beating Deer Creek. After that we play Putnam City North and Capitol Hill. We need to win a couple of those games and we should make the playoffs.”
It is the job of Brock and the other seniors to keep practicing hard for the younger players.
“We are trying to hold this team together,” he said. “I wear No. 55 which is a special thing here at LHS. It’s about being a good role model for the younger players.
“It’s not just what I do on the field but also in the classroom. Yes, we wanted to have a great senior season but now we are just working to finish in a positive fashion and that’s to make the playoffs.”
Currently Choctaw and Ponca City share the lead in the district at 3-1 while Putnam North and Putnam City are tied for third at 2-2. Then comes LHS and Northwest Classen at 1-3 and Capitol Hill at 1-4.
“Those standing give us hope and that’s the goal we want,” he said. “Having hope keeps us practicing hard.”
It takes plenty of energy to keep practicing and Brock has his favorite meal on his mind.
“My mom Brenda makes amazing enchiladas with beef and chicken in them,” he said. “I love spicy food and she makes sure that they turn out just like I want them.”
When it comes to the classroom Brock loves math and Algebra III has been his favorite.
“I hope to go to college and get a business degree,” he said. “I might try to start my own business but right now I’m just eager to get out of school and see what’s the next step in my life.”
While the offensive line doesn’t get a great deal of praise, Brock is just happy to be in a program where it’s a team effort.
“To make a play work we all have to do our job,” he said. “I started out as a guard but I got moved to center late in my freshman season and have loved every minute since then.”
Friday he is eager to get a chance to go against Choctaw and with some of the injured teammates back in the lineup, he’s excited.
“I think we have some key players back and we just want to go out and execute and keep the ball and make long drives and keep the ball from their offense,” he said. “We need long, production offensive drives and if we do that we have a chance at a big win.”
