Lawton Book and Play Review Club will review the book “When the Men Were Gone” Thursday.
Club members will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the McMahon Foundation, 716 SW C.
“When the Men Were Gone,” by Marjorie Herrera Lewis, is an historical fiction novel based on the true story of Tylene Wilson. According to Wikipedia, Wilson loved football, and was a teacher and assistant principal in Brownwood, Texas, during World War II. When the football coach was called to serve in the war, Wilson volunteered to coach the Daniel Baker college team. However, there were challenges both on and off the football field.
Rebecca Blackwood, who lives in Texas, will lead the review. Blackwood obtained her bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in education at Texas A &M. Blackwood enjoys substituting in several Fort Worth independent school district’s high schools and calls it her ministry. She loves reading and instills that in her students. She has returned frequently to Lawton as a reviewer and presenter of books with varied topics.
The event is open to the public, with individual reviews $10. Memberships in the club are available for $30.
