SATURDAY
No. 3 MICHIGAN 30 NO. 2 OHIO STATE 24
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — With Jim Harbaugh nowhere in sight, J.J. McCarthy and No. 3 Michigan stared down No. 2 Ohio State and ran the school’s win streak against the Buckeyes to three games with a 30-24 victory on Saturday in maybe the most consequential game in the history of the storied rivalry.
Michigan’s Rod Moore intercepted Kyle McCord’s wobbly pass intended for All-American Marvin Harrison Jr. at the Wolverines 21-yard line with 25 seconds left, setting off a wild celebration.
McCarthy took a knee, Michigan fans poured over the brick walls of The Big House and onto the field, and the Wolverines (12-0, 9-0) were off to their third straight Big Ten title game. Michigan is a victory away from a third consecutive College Football Playoff appearance.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day fell to 1-3 against the Wolverines as the Buckeyes (11-1, 8-1) once again lost the most important game on their schedule.
McCarthy went 16 for 20 for 148 yards and a touchdown. If this was the third-year player’s final appearance in The Game, he’ll finish 3-0.
Harbaugh served the final game of a three-game suspension over allegations of in-person scouting and sign stealing. Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was again filling for his boss and seemed to make all the right moves.
After Ohio State cut the lead to 27-24 with 8:05 left on a 14-yard touchdown pass from McCord to Harrison, Michigan proceeded to drain seven minutes off the clock. James Turner’s 37-yard field goal made it 30-24 with 1:05 remaining.
PURDUE 35, INDIANA 31
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Hudson Card tied his career high with three touchdown passes and scored on a 10-yard run with 2:39 left Saturday to give the Purdue Boilermakers a 35-31 victory over Indiana in the Old Oaken Bucket game. The Boilermakers have won three straight in this rivalry. It was the 300th all-time win at Ross-Ade Stadium, which closed out its 100th season. The Hoosiers finished the season with three straight losses by a combined total of 10 points, blowing late leads in all three. This time it was a kickoff out of bounds that set up Card’s masterful final drive.
FRIDAY
NO. 21 IOWA 13, NEBRASKA 10
LINCOLN, Neb. — Backup kicker Marshall Meeder barely cleared the crossbar with a 38-yard field goal as time ran out after Ethan Hurkett’s interception gave Iowa a final possession with 15 seconds left, and the Hawkeyes beat Nebraska.
Meeder, a senior transfer from Central Michigan, was given his first opportunity to kick for Iowa at the most pressure-packed moment after Drew Stevens had two field-goal tries blocked in the first half.
Teammates hoisted Meeder on their shoulders, and he held the Heroes Trophy that goes to the winner of the rivalry game as the Hawkeyes celebrated at midfield while officials determined whether any time remained on the clock.
The Hawkeyes (10-2, 7-2, No. 17 CFP), who clinched the Big Ten West title last week, earned a 10th win for the fourth time since 2015 and eighth under 25th-year coach Kirk Ferentz.
The Cornhuskers (5-7, 3-6) lost four straight to end Matt Rhule’s first season as coach. Their bowl drought will stretch to seven years, the longest among Power Five schools.
NO. 11 PENN STATE 42, MICHIGAN STATE 0
DETROIT — Drew Allar threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns and Kaytron Allen ran for a career-high 137 yards, providing No. 11 Penn State with plenty of offense in a 42-0 win over Michigan State. The Nittany Lions had 586 yards of offense in a game they controlled from the start. The eight-loss Spartans closed a tumultuous season that was stunted by Mel Tucker getting suspended and fired. It also hurt that a slew of injuries left them with about 50 scholarship players healthy enough to play in the finale at Ford Field. Allar completed 17 of 26 passes, a week after getting knocked out against Rutgers with a hard hit to his right shoulder.
