Christian Bennett is on a mission, not just as a member of the Cache football team but as somebody who wants to be a part of another team, the United States Marine Corps.
“My plan is to enlist in the Marine Corps and eventually become an officer,” the two-way starter said. “I want to be in the special forces; that’s the plan. My family has a deep history with the military and I want to follow in that tradition.
“My grandfather has always talked to me about having a challenge and one of my teachers is a former military man. The things we learn in football—toughness and discipline—are things that you need to succeed in the military.”
This week the challenge is a district opponent, Elk City, and the Elks have long been a tough team that the Bulldogs have faced for years.
“They are going to run the football; that’s what they do,” Bennett said. “They will line up and try to move you out and run the football. They don’t throw it that much but we still have to be ready for anything.”
While Bennett does play slotback on offense, he is more at home on defense.
“I have always enjoyed playing defense,” he said. “My freshman year I played on both offense and defense but the last two years I was mostly on defense. Now I’m doing both.”
Bennett, who is 6-0, 180 pounds, had been one of several Bulldogs who have been out with injuries but now they are all healed and the team is at full strength.
“It was tough having several players out but everyone is ready to go,” he said.
Did that affect the mental attitude for the Bulldogs?
“It was frustrating to have guys out but now I think we are in a good state of mind,” he said. “We’ve had our chances but we have to come out now and set the tone on defense and let teams know we are going to be physical.
“We aren’t a big team but we have to be physical and use our quickness, that’s the key for us moving forward.”
Elk City it the first district game for the Bulldogs and it will be the third straight road game for Cache. After that Woodward comes to Cache and then comes Weatherford in another road game.
“This is a game we feel like we can win and the big key will be getting off the line of scrimmage and putting some pressure on their quarterback to make quick decisions,” Bennett said. “I run track and that’s been something that has helped me become a better football player.”
Bennett loves to play video games but it’s not the normal Madden or other sports games.
“I love to play poker and blackjack on video,” he said with a big grin. “I love numbers and playing those games where you have to know the odds is a good way to learn more about those games.”
When it comes to eating, Bennett is pretty much a normal young man but there is one big twist.
“I love a big old steak cooked medium rare with a loaded baked potato,” he said. “Then give me some asparagus with it. That’s the healthy part of my diet.”
While he is excited about seeing the world, it may take him far away from Cache.
“I probably won’t come back to this area after being in the Marines,” he said. “I just want to go and see the world.”
