A 61-year-old Geronimo received a 10-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to lighting trash on fire in a dumpster in back of a convenience store before going inside to buy a 6-pack of beer in October 2023.
On Tuesday, Robert Wayne Luna pleaded guilty in Comanche County District Court to a felony count of third-degree arson, records indicate.
As part of Chief District Judge Grant Sheperd’s sentence, Luna will be under two years of Department of Corrections supervision.
With his plea, Luna admitted admitted to starting a dumpster fire behind the Patriot Convenience Store, 600 E. Main in Geronimo in October 2023.
Security video showed Luna walk to the dumpster, look around and then reach into the dumpster before grabbing a bag of trash, pulling a lighter from his pocket and moving it inside the bag before replacing the bag and the lighter, the probable cause affidavit states. He then walked around the building and went inside to buy a 6-pack of Keystone Light beer.
Luna was then seen leaving the store before stopping to watch the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department extinguish the fire in the dumpster, the affidavit states.
When caught by police, Luna admitted to starting the fire but said he didn’t know why he did it, according to the affidavit. He was arrested.
