Last season Apache’s playoff bubble burst in its playoff opener in part due to a couple of key injuries and Friday the Warriors once again seemed in trouble at home. But this time Apache came to life with a 24-0 scoring edge over the final quarter and a half of the game to earn a wild 50-31 Class A playoff victory over Thomas.

Earlier in the week, Apache coach Tanner Koons talked about the Thomas tradition and how the Warriors had to be able to make plays and throttle the Terriers in key defensive situations. And that’s just what the Warriors did during crunch time.

Apache will again be at the friendly confines of Chandler Stadium next week to host Stratford which beat Hinton, 27-6.

There was another big win in Class A as Walters used some big defensive plays to shut down Mooreland, 18-12. The Blue Devils will hit the road next week to face Dibble which routed Cashion, 72-26.

Lawton High School and MacArthur both saw their seasons come to an end against strong teams. Sand Springs handed the Wolverines a 56-24 Class 6AII loss while No. 3-ranked Guthrie beat MacArthur, 49-21 in a Class 5A contest.

Cache was able to stay close for a time with powerful Blanchard before former Eisenhower quarterback Carson Cooksey fired three touchdown passes to lead the Lions to a 27-0 victory in Class 4A action.

Marlow flexed its muscle on the road in Tulsa, beating Metro Christian, 28-14, in a Class 3A playoff upset. The Outlaws will hit the road again next week to face Cascia Hall which beat Stigler, 32-21.

Frederick came within a whisker of pulling an upset in Class 2A, losing to Kingston, 30-27.

In eight-man action, Class C’s top-ranked Tipton coasted to a 56-8 mercy-rule victory, but the news wasn’t good for two other area eight-man teams as Cyril lost a Class B battle with Okeene, 56-6, and Mt. View-Gotebo was ousted after a 54-8 loss to Waynoka.

Tipton will look to pad its winning streak at home against Graham which ousted Wesleyan Christian, 40-33.

Apache strikes late
Tradition-rich Thomas seemed on the verge of an upset over No. 8-ranked Apache after taking a 31-26 lead with 5:40 left in the third quarter.
However, from that point in the game, the Warriors turned to the Scott brothers to spark the offense and cap the big comeback victory.
First younger brother Dayton Scott capped a good Apache drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, then senior Dom Scott scored on runs of 20 and 15 yards to put the game away as Apache dominated the second half by outscoring the Terriers, 30-7.
While the Scott brothers led the scoring late in the game, Apache quarterback Houston Herrin had another strong effort, completing 8-of-12 passes for 105 yards and carrying the ball 21 times for 150 yards and two touchdowns.
The first half also had plenty of action as the Terriers got the scoring started on a 31-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead. Dayton Scott helped the Warriors answer fast, returning the ensuing kickoff to the Thomas 35-yard line.
Herrin and Company moved smartly downfield and he scored from one yard out on a fourth down play with 5:05 left in the first quarter. Apache was unable to convert a 2-point PAT try and trailed 7-6.
The Terriers wasted little time responding, going upstairs for a 35-yard touchdown pass and a 14-6 lead after one period.
Thomas caught Apache napping on the ensuing kickoff as the visitors tried the onside kick and recovered to start the second quarter. The Terriers faced a 4th-and-9 on that drive but were able to get a big first down and then score on a 34-yard TD run for a 21-6 lead.
Apache wasn’t about to waste time, getting touchdown runs from Herrin and Dom Scott to get within one, 21-20, midway through the second quarter.
After the teams traded possessions, Thomas was able to move downfield in the final seconds of the first half and eventually got within range and kicked a 26-yard field goal for a 24-20 halftime cushion.
At halftime it was the Warriors who seemed to make all the right adjustments as each team scored on their first drives before Apache went to work dominating the rest of the game to advance to next week’s second round.
Coach Koons had kind words for Dom Scott after the big win.
“Dom had seven solo tackles and was in on three others,” Koons said. “He also broke up four passes.”
His value was also important on offense and special teams.
“He had four catches for 47 yards and he rushed 15 times for 157 and four touchdowns,” Koons added. “He wound up with 223 all-purpose yards for us.”

Lions blank Bulldogs
Cache’s defense had been strong over the past couple of weeks as the Bulldogs beat Clinton and Chickasha down the stretch to reach the playoffs.
And while the Lions were able to take an early 7-0 lead after Cooksey fired a 15-yard TD pass to Hudsen Periman, the Bulldogs shut down several other Blanchard drives and went to halftime trailing just 7-0.
But as the number of snaps climbed for the Cache defense, Blanchard was able to slowly pull away. Cooksey hit Terrance Johnson on a 19-yard TD toss in the third quarter but this one was still far from over.
Cache was able to move the ball at times but eventually the Lions took command in the fourth quarter as Cooksey fired a 27-yard scoring strike to Matthew Tonsing and then the Lions closed out the scoring with a short touchdown run to arrange the final score.
