Lawton Heritage Association is holding its annual event to give visitors a chance to see the historic Mattie Beal Home.
An Afternoon Tea, set for Sept. 21, will give visitors a chance to celebrate the 145th birthday of Mattie Beal Payne, the Wichita, Kansas, telephone operator who was the second person to draw for land in the homestead lottery that established Lawton in 1901. Participants will be invited to enjoy table-side service, selecting from various fruits, handcrafted sandwiches, scones, cookies, homemade jam and tea. Tea will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tickets are $25 and will be sold through Venmo: Lawton Heritage Association @MattieBealHome, by emailing [email protected], or by calling or texting (580) 678-3156. Tickets will be sold through Sept. 20.
The event supports the Lawton Heritage Association, the entity that maintains the historic home at 1008 SW 5th.
That mansion was built by Beal and her husband Charles Payne between 1907 and 1910 as a home for the couple and their three daughters. Restoration projects for the neoclassical house have returned the structure to what it looked like when the Payne family was in residence.
