The Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter will offer an educational program for the community, “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia”, from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at McMahon Tomlinson Nursing and Rehab Center, 2007 NW 52nd Street.
Today, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including more than 70,000 in Oklahoma and 135,000 unpaid caregivers, according to a press release.
“Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia” includes information about the impact of Alzheimer’s, the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, stages and risk factors, current research and treatments available for some symptoms, and Alzheimer’s Association resources.
This educational opportunity can help those who may be experiencing dementia symptoms and their families know the signs of dementia and make informed decisions to seek medical care. Early detection and diagnosis of these conditions offers the best opportunity for care management and treatment. It also provides diagnosed individuals and their caregivers more time to plan for the future, adopt lifestyle changes that may help slow disease progression, participate in clinical trials and to live with higher quality of life, for as long as possible. Early detection and diagnosis are the first steps towards creating a plan of action.
Registration is available online at alz.org/crf or by calling the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.
