ALTUS — An officer-involved shooting is being investigated in Altus by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
The fatal shooting happened Thursday night in the 900 block of East Liveoak Street, according to a statement by Police Chief Tim Murphy.
Officers were called around 10:20 p.m. to the report of a man walking in the street who appeared to be injured and was bleeding. When police made contact with the man they discovered he had a knife, Murphy stated. The man then charged an unidentified officer who responded with gunfire.
“After the shooting, officers rendered aid to the suspect until he was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital by EMS personnel, where he later died,” he stated. “His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. His body has been transported to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s office in Oklahoma City for an autopsy.”
The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the OSBI investigation, Murphy stated.
No officers were injured.
