UPDATE: This event has been canceled.
ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE – Airmen from the 97th Air Mobility Wing will launch a high-altitude weather balloon at approximately 1:15 p.m. today from Altus Air Force Base.
This launch will be the first of a new weather balloon program coming to Altus Air Force Base. The program, which will facilitate the regular launch of high-altitude weather balloons, is designed to give forecasters with the 97th Operations Group more accurate data when forecasting weather patterns for flying operations and severe weather preparation, according to a press release.
Weather balloons are used throughout the Department of Defense, National Weather Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide accurate readings of the upper levels of the earth’s atmosphere.
Local residents should not be alarmed if they see the weather balloon. There will be no disruption to normal base operations, according to a press release.
