Coaches talk a great deal about the depth of their teams and while it is great to get balanced scoring from the reserves, that is not always the benefit of using numerous players.
Thursday evening the Cameron women got production from its three leading scorers and while the other players combined to add 11 points in the Aggies’ 68-54 victory, those reserves helped by producing numerous turnovers that ended up adding 16 points to the CU totals in an important Lone Star Conference victory over Western New Mexico at the Aggie Gym.
At this point in the season, wins are critical as the teams jockey for position entering the LSC Tournament. The CU women are now 6-10 in the West Division which is good for fifth place. UT-Permian Basin leads at 13-2 while Lubbock Christian and Angelo State are tied for second at 11-4. West Texas is fourth and Cameron fifth, just ahead of Eastern New Mexico which is 4-11.
Those standings show just how important Saturday’s home game is for the Cameron women who will be hosting ENMU at 1 p.m.
While Saturday’s game is important for the CU women, the men’s game is just as critical for the Aggies who are fighting for a top-three finish in the West Division which would aid their first-round matchup.
The Aggies beat Western New Mexico, 108-91, Thursday to climb to 10-6 in the West Division which has them tied for fourth. West Texas is on cruise control with a 15-0 division record while Lubbock Christian is alone in second at 12-3. ENMU is third at 10-5, just in front of the Aggies and Angelo State who are both 10-6.
Cameron men have six games remaining, including four at home although two of those are against East Division teams (Texas A&M-International and A&M-Kingsville). Today’s game is huge for the Aggies as they then hit the road next week to face Angelo State and UT-Permian Basin, which is 8-8 in the West.
Shamika Smith continues to provide a good deal of CU’s offensive load, scoring 23 Thursday in the win over WNMU. She hit 9-of-13 from the field and also grabbed 10 rebounds. Katie King added 18 points for the Aggies and Korie Allensworth added 14.
Cameron men continued to spread the scoring load around as six players scored in double figures with Lavell Brodnex leading the way with 22. Reggie Prudhomme added 15 while Jaylan Thomas, Jaxon Ingram and Andre Washington each produced 14. Daylon Andrews was next on the scoring chart with 13.
