This season is one where the seedings for the girls bracket of the Comanche County Basketball Tournament were spot on as the four top seeds dominated with the tightest game being a 23-point win by No. 4 seed Sterling over Big Pasture.
Now with those first-round games out of the way, the competition balance should provide more excitement for the fans as the two consolation games this evening and then the two girls semifinals could be interesting matchups.
Top-seeded Geronimo had little trouble Monday using a host of scoring threats and tough defense to subdue Fletcher. And, from past results the Bluejays seem to be improved from the early part of the season. On Nov. 15 Geronimo girls beat Sterling, 72-64, in a very competitive game. However, on Jan. 5 in the semifinals of the Geronimo Dome Classic, the host Bluejays rolled to a 67-22 victory. So tonight’s third rematch between the two teams at 7:10 p.m. at the Great Plains Coliseum seems to favor the Bluejays.
Tonight’s final game matches Chattanooga and Walters and that stacks up as a battle of two aggressive defensive clubs. Chatty is 15-3, losing only to Fort Cobb-Broxton, Geronimo and Class A power Cyril. The losses to Fort Cobb-Broxton and Geronimo came early in the season, on Nov. 10 and 13, respectively. That was when the Warriors were still learning the system that new coach Bo Thomason brought to Chatty and in recent weeks his team appears to have improved a good deal since those earlier losses.
While the semifinal games will highlight tonight’s schedule, the two consolation games will mean a good deal to the four teams involved because you win and there is a chance to play for the consolation title. However, the losers will sit back and watch Saturday’s action. Fletcher and Big Pasture begin the schedule at 4:30 p.m. and Tipton and Indiahoma will tangle around 5:50.
Stephens County
Tonight is a big night for this old tournament as the four games will be the semifinals in both girls and boys.
Marlow and Ryan girls open the card at 4 p.m. at the Comanche High School Gym and Empire and Comanche battle in the second girls semifinal contest around 6:40 p.m.
On the boys side top-seeded Velma-Alma faces Central High at 5:20 p.m. and long-time rivals Comanche and Marlow will battle in the 8 p.m. finale. Comanche boys were the last team to win Tuesday night, beating Ryan in a 75-32 contest. Of the four first-round boys games, the closest margin of victory was 21 points, that coming from Central High in its 61-40 victory over Empire.
Caddo County
Tonight’s schedule at Anadarko High School features four consolation games and you can bet that the teams preparing for Friday’s semifinals will get a good scouting report today in preparation for some interesting matchups.
Those Friday semifinal games have some interesting matchups including a battle between rivals Cyril and Fort Cobb-Broxton at 5:15 p.m. Those two programs have met numerous times in the finals but with the Pirates dropping to the fourth seed, that’s how the semifinal game came about.
Binger-Oney boys are the No. 2 seed and will face Apache Friday in the final game around 7:45 p.m. The Bobcats coasted past Mt. View-Gotebo Tuesday, 58-24, while Apache had to go to overtime to beat Hinton, 51-48.
The girls semifinals Friday include No. 3-ranked Cyril girls who face Fort Cobb-Broxton at 4 p.m. in the opening game. The other girls semifinal contest pits Mt. View-Gotebo against Lookeba-Sickles at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
