By the time the county tournament week rolls around, there isn’t a big need for coaches to go scout opponents because there are few secrets at this point of the season.

And, when any boys team is going to have to go against Chattanooga you can expect pressure defense from the first whistle to the last; that’s a given.

And this year the Warriors have more depth and athletic ability and that was on display Tuesday as they rolled to a 78-53 victory over Geronimo to advance to Friday’s Comanche County Tournament semifinals against Big Pasture/Tipton.

“I thought we got after it pretty good on defense but I wish we had done a better job anticipating on the press; we let them get outside too many times,” Chatty boys coach Billy Karr said. “The thing I liked was we forced them to play at our tempo and when that happens I feel good about our chances.”

The Warriors also shot well, knocking down 11 treys, which is just about normal for Karr’s club.

“We average between 10 and 15 threes a game, so that was about what we wanted,” he said. “Plus we have several guys who can make them and that helps.”

Tuesday night at the Great Plains Coliseum Karr had five players hit from long range including five from Jackson Franks who had 18 to join three other Chatty players in double figures. Cooper Loftin had 27, Michael Paddyaker 14 and Owny McCoin 12. Paddyaker gave the crowd a scare when he went down under the Geronimo goal and limped off the court. However, after several minutes he was able to return.\

Geronimo was in the game for a quarter, trailing 15-12 after the first eight minutes but the Warriors outscored the Bluejays, 43-28, in the middle two quarters to pull alway.

In other boys games last night, Sterling decked Fletcher, 59-37, as 13 players scored for the Tigers as the Wildcats were without any reserves and by the end of the first half this one was all but over.

In the late game Big Pasture used big games from Hayden and Lane Tinsley scored 22 and 21, respectively in a 63-56 victory over Tipton.

Caddo County

Cyril girls came in as the favorite in the Caddo County Tournament and Tuesday they advanced to the semifinals in convincing fashion, routing Carnegie, 68-18, behind 23 points from Hadley Gibson.

That sets up a battle with Fort Cobb-Broxton Friday at 4 p.m. for a berth in Saturday’s title game. The other girls semifinal contest will match Mt. View-Gotebo against Lookeba-Sickles Friday at 6:30 p.m.

On the boys side top-seeded Fort Cobb-Broxton moved into the semifinals and the opponent on Friday will be arch rival Cyril. The Mustangs coasted past Lookeba-Sickles Tuesday, 74-35, and seem on the verge of defending their title, but that’s nothing new since Scott Hines’ club has been a dominant force in the past two decades. Cyril boys advanced Monday with a 69-38 victory over Carnegie.

Stephens County

The boys took over Tuesday the Comanche Gym and there weren’t any last-second heroics as the games were decided well before the end.

Velma-Alma’s powerful boys coasted past Bray-Doyle, 78-17, Central High beat Empire, 61-40, and Marlow handled Waurika, 81-38. Ryan and Comanche were playing the late game.

The semifinals are scheduled today with Marlow-Ryan girls opening the session at 4 p.m. followed by V-A and Central High boys at 5:20. Empire and Comanche girls meet in the other semifinal while Marlow boys will face the Ryan/Comanche winner at 8 p.m. tonight.
