SILVER CITY, N.M.—Winning road games in the Lone Star Conference is never easy, even when the opponent isn’t among the leaders, but at this point of the season wins are just what both Cameron University’s basketball teams need as they fight to climb the ladder in the standings.
The Cameron women will come back to Lawton with a two-game winning streak after earning a 51-42 victory over Western New Mexico Saturday. The win pushed the CU women to 3-6 in the LSC which is good for sixth ahead of Eastern New Mexico and Eastern New Mexico. Lubbock Christian women lead the west division at 7-1, followed by UT-Permian Basin and Angelo State at 6-2 and West Texas at 4-4.
The CU women and men will return to the Aggie Gym Thursday to face Permian Basin at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30.
Jeff Mahoney’s women Cameron University had the upper hand for the entirety of this contest. While they led the entire distance, the Aggies struggled to make shots, hitting just 22-of-66 shots from the field for a paltry 33.3 percent. But the Aggies did play good defense, limiting the hosts to just 17-of-58 shooting for 29.3 percent.
Once again the CU starters were the only Aggies to score as Shamica Smith led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Katie King and Kailyn Lay added 14 each.
Men end three-game skid
The Aggies used a solid effort from the free throw line to pull out an 84-76 victory to run their LSC record to 5-4 which has them tied with UT-Permian Basin tied for fifth. West Texas is 8-0 and leading the West while Lubbock Christian is second at 7-1 and Angelo State third at 7-2. ENMU, which beat the Aggies Thursday, is fourth at 6-2.
CU men took control of this game midway through the first half when Miles Gurske broke a 24-all tie that put Cameron up by two with a layup off a fast break. The Mustangs mounted a comeback late in the game and came within one of the Aggies, but good free-throw shooting on the part of CU kept WNMU at bay. Cameron shot 84 percent from the free-throw line, including a 15-of-18 in the second half to secure the victory.
