Flagg named the AP men’s player of the year

As promised, one last Honor score went in the books for 2023 giving us a total of just thirty Honors rolled on local lanes in what ended up being one of the lowest scoring years in quite a while.

Rolling the final honor of the year was Tim Lundquist of the Suburban league at Twin Oaks.

After starting the night with a 255 game, Lundquist filled the front eleven frames of game two with strikes but number twelve wasn’t meant to be and a defiant 10-pin stood to allow for a 299 score.

Lundquist was back on track in game three but it was reported that somewhere along the way, an-other 10-pin made an appearance that resulted in an open frame that would come back to haunt the 223 average bowler as his final game of the year ended up being a 236 to sum up a 790 for series, just ten sticks from an 800 series.

An unofficial count, aka my records, it looks like the tally for honors f04 2023 was as follows, 8 — 290 games, 1 — 297 game, 2 — 298 games, 7 – 299 games, 10 – 300 games and 2 – 800 series, both at 800 on the nose.

Adult Highlights

Besides Lundquist’s high scoring, there were a couple of other Suburban leaguers trying to make the most of the end of the year.

Secretary Jim Bomboy rolled a nice 758 on games of 269, 254 and 235, Joe Langley put a 749 on the board with his scores of 275, 225 and 249, Chris Lowe shot 238, 277 and 192 for a 707 and Tory Morales hit 700 even with games of 243, 258 and 199.

And before we bid a fond farewell to 2023, Nathan Baggett of the TNT league at Thunderbird Lanes put his name in the hat with a 704 that went 237, 224 and 243.

January 2nd rolled around and Jeff Janssen was happy to report starting 2024 off with a super 772 series. Janssen, bowling in the His and Hers’, rolled 268, 258 and 246 to make up the set.

And from the honorable mention file this week, congrats to Bruce Sanders of the Tuesday Night Mixed for bowling a 266 game off a 151 average.

I would say that is a good start to the New Year, let’s keep it going.

Youth Highlights

Youth league started back this past Saturday morning. Tune in next week for highlights.

No-Tap News

Malden Smith rolled the only no-tap 300 game in last Friday’s senior 9-pin event at Thunderbird Lanes that assisted in an 857 handicap series with added scratch games of 277 and 226.

John Fortner was a distant second with 789 and Roy Johnson took third place with 766.

Smith and Fortner were also first and second in Scratch Singles with Smith putting up an 803 and Fortner scoring 717.

Sue Avis was back in action after having surgery on her wrist, taking the ladies first place prize with 860, followed by Kathy Zerbe who put a 768 together first second.

Mystery Doubles winners were Diane Frame with Cleo Travis, 543, Justin Williams with Malden Smith, 546 and John Fortner with Sue Avis, 588.

Strike pot winners included Margit Augustine, Malden Smith, Diane Frame, Mike Peckinpaugh and Randy Travis and for the second week in a row, the new Odd Pin Challenge shot was the only special ticket to get hit, this week by Ken Knoff.

This event held every Friday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. and is open to all senior bowlers age 50 (+) with a verifiable average.
