ANADARKO — The mother of a 4-year-old Cyril girl who went missing and was found dead last year waived her preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Jasmin Adina Kay Brownfield, 27, of Stillwater, is charged with two felony counts of counts of child neglect by abandonment and has been bound over for trial, according to Caddo County District Court records. She is the biological mother of Athena Brownfield.
Brownfield left Athena and her sister in the care of Ivon Neil Adams III and his wife, her cousin, Alysia Adams in 2021 while she was experiencing mental health issues that left her feeling she couldn’t care for the children properly, according to the warrant affidavit.
While Athena and her sister were in the Adams’ custody, investigators allege the girls were malnourished and neglected. The girls were not enrolled in school and hadn’t received medical check-ups, the affidavit states.
On Jan. 10, 2022, a postal carrier discovered Athena’s then-5-year-old sister who had been left alone at the couple’s Cyril home. Ivon Adams had taken the couple’s four biological children to his wife’s family in Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 7, 2022, and social media posts from that time by Alysia Adams revealed she’d been in Oklahoma City with another man when her husband left.
Investigators learned Athena was missing on Jan. 10, 2022, while speaking with Alysia Adams. A multi-day search for Athena ended Jan. 17, 2022, when her body was discovered on property where the Adams had lived near Rush Springs in Grady County.
According to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s preliminary autopsy report, Athena’s probable cause of death was determined to be from acute pneumonia that complicated her malnutrition. She weighed 24 pounds at the time of death and was less than in the 3rd percentile for her weight-for-height, according to the report.
Athena also tested positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus, human adenovirus, human bocavirus and COVID-19.
Alysia Adams told investigators her husband, Ivon, had beaten the girl to death the night of Christmas 2022 at their home in Cyril. Early the next morning, she said he buried her on the land outside of Rush Springs, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. Phone data verified Ivon Adams’ travels.
Ivon Adams was arrested in Phoenix, Ariz., on Jan. 12, 2022, for a first-degree murder warrant and Alysia Adams was arrested for two counts of child neglect. The pair are being tried jointly.
After waiving their preliminary hearing in December, charges were amended against Ivon Neil Adams III, 38, and his wife, Alysia Adams, 32, both of Cyril.
Ivon Adams’ murder charge was amended to second-degree murder and he received an additional charge of the unlawful removal of a dead body.
Alysia Adams’ charges were amended to first-degree or second-degree murder as well as a single charge of child neglect, and a charge of obstructing officers.
According to the amended information, Alysia Adams is accused of causing Athena’s death due to abuse experienced while she was responsible for her health, safety and welfare. Among the allegations is that Brownfield was put in a closet and deprived of proper nutrition and/or water.
The couple is scheduled for formal arraignment at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 21, records indicate.
Following a bond reduction hearing lowering her bond from $100,000 to $50,000, Brownfield has been free since May 22, 2023.
Brownfield is scheduled for formal arraignment at 1:30 p.m. March 15, records indicate.
