LAS VEGAS—Hunter Herrin posted a 7.4 as the third roper to make his run in the tie-down roping Thursday at the National Finals Rodeo then watched as a host of big names faltered and in the end the Apache cowboy claimed the go-round title and a check for $30,000.
Herrin had a bad round early in the Finals but he’s now won nearly $90,000 and placed in the past five go-rounds.
“I got off to a good start and I knew that was a good calf and it just worked out,” Herrin said. “I thought Shad (Mayfield) was going to win but that calf got up even with two wraps. I was going to be happy with second but you hate to see that happen.”
The Finals close with performances tonight at Saturday when the world champions will be crowned.
