The Rev. Dr. Charles W. Whitlow, former longtime Lawton pastor and community leader, will be posthumously inducted into the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Oklahoma District Hall of Fame on Saturday in Shawnee.
Whitlow, who died Jan. 2, 2021, was nominated by members of Lawton’s Eta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha for his lifetime of community service and his support of local, state, regional and national programs of the fraternity.
Whitlow began his membership and service in the fraternity as a student at Langston University, where he was initiated into the Beta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha on Dec. 1, 1948. As a member of his Lawton Chapter, Whitlow served as Eta Xi Lambda’s Chaplain for over 40 years.
Whitlow served as president of the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention; instructor in the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; moderator of Oklahoma Western District; United Way’s Oklahoma Board of Directors; NAACP; and, Lawton’s Northside Chamber of Commerce. He was pastor of Union Baptist Church-Lawton for over 46 years, was a retired Lawton Public Schools educator and counselor and a Navy veteran.
His awards and honors include a Lawton street named in his honor, being the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Service Award, and having a proclamation signed by the City of Lawton’s mayor honoring him posthumously for his community impact.
