The Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum is proud to continue the tradition of the annual Candlelight Stroll around Fort Sill’s Old Post Quadrangle from 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Dec. 10.
The annual event peers into the past at what it was like to live on Fort Sill during Christmastime in the 1870s. The tour includes the Guardhouse, the Cavalry Barracks, Sherman House, the Old Post Chapel and the first School of Fire. Historical interpreters, including “Buffalo Soldiers,” Deputy U.S. Marshals, and clergy of the day, will present the history at each location as well as leading the tours. The first Post Commander, Col. Benjamin Grierson, and his wife, Mrs. Alice Grierson, will be present to welcome everyone at the Sherman House, which is still used today by Fort Sill’s commanding general.
“The Candlelight Stroll is a great way to usher in the holiday season,” said Don Herrick, Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill Public Affairs director. “This is the best-preserved frontier-era Army post in the United States and the Old Post Quadrangle is a spectacular place to get some frontier holiday history.”
The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and will be available for pick up from the Museum Visitors Center beginning today. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, and the limit is four tickets per person. Tickets will not be held or mailed out.
Participants must be able to walk at a brisk pace. Visitors must have a DoD ID card or a visitor’s pass from the Fort Sill Visitor Welcome Center (https://sill-www.army.mil/vcc/) to gain access to the post.
