CORDELL — An Altus man was killed Friday night in a Washita County wreck investigators blamed on his crossing into the oncoming lane.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Charles McDowell, 37, died at the scene of the wreck, 4 miles south of Cordell.
McDowell was driving a Chevrolet Impala northbound on U.S. 183 around 7:10 p.m. Friday when he crossed the center line and struck a southbound Chevrolet Silverado driven by Amy Lemons, Trooper Colby Sanders reported. Both drivers were pinned inside their vehicles before Cordell firefighters were able to extricate them.
Lemons, 38, of Cordell, was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City for treatment of arm, leg and internal trunk injuries. A passenger, Michael Martin, 40, of Cordell, was taken to Cordell Memorial Hospital and later transferred to OU Medical for treatment of leg and internal trunk injuries, Sanders reported.
Two juvenile passengers of Lemons, both of Cofdell, were also admitted to OU Children’s Center in Oklahoma City. A 13-year-old boy was admitted with arm, leg and internal trunk injuries and a 12-year-old girl was admitted for head, leg and internal trunk injuries, according to the report.
McDowell was the only one wearing a seatbelt, Sanders reported.
The trooper reported the condition of each driver at the time of the wreck remains under investigation.
