There are no perfect people; that’s something each of us learns at some point.
Last week Braden Kavanaugh and the Cache Bulldogs were playing a very important district game and while Cache was able to make many good plays there were some mistakes that cost them.
Kavanaugh was in the middle of one of those during a Cache punting attempt.
“It was one of those things, I am the deep snapper and when I got in my stance I reached down to get my hand on the ball and I felt sweat in my eyes. I reached up to wipe my face and as soon as I took my hand off the ball I realized what I had done.”
What he did was draw a penalty and it eventually led to a missed opportunity.
“I’ve done snaps for a long time and it’s always about the routine,” he said. “I made a mistake and I have to live with that. My teammates came over to me and told me to forget that and move on. It is something you can do over but it is moments like that where you learn all about adversity and how to handle it.”
Kavanaugh is like many kids from rural communities; he works for farmers and ranchers doing the various jobs that are needed.
“I spend time working for several farmers, building fence and helping gather the cattle,” he said. “Most of the time I’m plowing and I enjoy that because you are out there by yourself and you can think about things.”
Has he ever done the one thing most plow hands have done at one point which is tear out some fencing.
“No, I’ve never done that but I’ve had guys tell me they had done that,” he said. “I think I’ve worked hard to avoid that because I’d be the one to fix it.”
One handy farm skill is welding and he’s even thinking about making that a career.
“I am going to Vo-Tech (Great Plains Technical School) for welding and it’s been fun learning,” he said. “Last year was spent learning the basics and now we are adding the other more advanced skills.”
When it comes to eating after a long day over plowing, his choice of food is simple.
“My dad is really good on the grill and he takes a steak and marinates it and it’s always very good,” the senior said. “That’s probably my favorite food.”
Tonight, the Bulldogs host John Marshall in a game the Bulldogs need to win to help them reach the playoffs.
“They have some good skilled people but I think we have a good chance to get this win; we really need it. I think we need to win two of the final three games.
“Cache got into the playoffs my freshman year but I was in North Carolina then,” he said. “We all want to reach this goal and I want to do my part.”
