A 58-year-old homeless man admitted to stealing a Soldier EXpress bus because he didn’t have anywhere else to stay, according to police.
Now he’s behind bars on $50,000 bond.
Vincent Frederick Saiz made his initial appearance Friday in Comanche County District Court where he received a felony charge of larceny of a motor vehicle after two or more felony convictions, records indicate. He faces between six to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The owner and a supervisor for Soldier Xpress told police a bus was stolen from its post at 809 SE Interstate Drive. It was found at the Castle Inn parking lot, 2202 U.S. 277. They said they’d gone onto the bus and discovered a sleeping bag, bicycle, bags, suitcase and other items, the probable cause affidavit states.
Lawton police officers went onto the bus and Saiz put his hands up to let them know he was on the bus, according to Officer Tiffany Sparks. Saiz said he took the bus and parked it because he had nowhere to stay and that he wanted to get caught so he would have a place to stay and eat, the affidavit states. He said he planned to return the bus.
Saiz has prior felony convictions in Cleveland County in March 2013 for uttering a forged instrument and in Comanche County in December 2020 for obtaining cash by false pretenses, records indicate.
A preliminary hearing conference has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 16, 2024.
