Hitt gets coaching at school and home

Carson Hitt has made a good deal of improvement along the Elgin offensive line and even though he’s a senior now he’s still learning the finer points to play in the trenches.

For Hitt, his coaching comes at school as well as home where dad Damon Hitt is always there to make sure the 6-1, 235-pound senior is doing things right. Dad played football at Eisenhower and coached at Elgin for a time and is now the school’s athletic director.

“Dad wants me to do good so he’s always pointing out the mistakes I make so I will keep improving,” Carson said.

The Owls are doing well at the mid-point of the schedule, standing 5-0 and holding down the No. 5 ranking in Class 5A.

Last week the Owls made the long journey to Ardmore and took their second District 5A-1 win of the season.

“I think we played pretty well against Ardmore,” he said. “I don’t remember any major mess ups.”

One reason the Owls are unbeaten is their solid offensive line with big Keith Ferguson being one of the best offensive linemen in Southwest Oklahoma.

“I think what makes our line good is we are a pretty tight group and we have a good deal of experience,” he said. “We have also been having good practices.”

And the club has good leadership according to Hitt.

“We have some seniors who are good leaders and even some of our younger players are always motivating us,” he said. “I’d say Keith and Tres (quarterback Lorah) are our best leaders. Tres gets the calls in from Coach (Chalmer) Wyatt and then makes sure we all have the play call.”

Hitt was playing guard for a time but the coaches moved him to center to put one more big body up front.

“Center is a lot of fun; for me it’s better than playing guard,” he said. “At center my first priority is to get the nose guard blocked and then find another defender and get that secondary block. We also double on the nose guard if we are running up the middle but most times I have to go one-on-one against them.

“I have decent strength and my footwork is OK. But there is always room for any player to improve from week-to-week.”

Like all offensive linemen, Hitt loves to eat and he is quick to offer his best choices.

“Shay’s (Spencer) mom really cooks great food and when we go over there and eat on most Thursdays,” Hiitt said.

But he also loves one of his mom’s favorite meals to cook, fettuccine alfredo.

“Mom’s chicken alfredo is just amazing and when we have a special occasion that’s normally what she serves,” he said. “I can usually eat three or four plates; it’s that good.”

Hitt is also a good student with designs on a career helping animals.

“Right now my favorite class is animal science and I’m on our FFA science team,” he said. I want to be a veterinarian so I can help animals. It’s something I’ve always loved; dogs and cats.”

In an effort to get a start on his college courses he took Algebra over the summer.

While Hitt hasn’t played any defense this season he still knows that unit has been keeping the offense ready at the drop of a dime.

“Our defense is really playing well,” Hitt said. “Coach (Jack) Baker is really aggressive and I think he’s put together one of the best defenses in Class 5A.

“They get stops and then we have to get back out there and do our jobs on offense. We have a great group of coaches and they make this program like a big family. Our coaches push us because they want to see each of us reach our potential.”

So, just how good can this team be?

“I think we can be state champs if we keep working hard and improving. Those two final games last season just made us want to work harder during the summer. We all kept saying we are 0-2 to start the season and that’s why we were so ready for our opener against Anadarko.”

Hitt had gone out for wrestling last season but suffered an injury and was never able to rejoin the team. His older brother Rylan Hitt was a two-time state champion but he’s not wrestling in college, instead he’s attending Oklahoma State University majoring in engineering.

Friday night the Owls will host Altus, which lost to MacArthur last week.

“I’ve seen some video on them and they run that Flexbone, so it will be another good matchup for our defense,” he added.

After Friday’s home game with Altus the Owls will host Noble, visit Duncan, host MacArthur and then close the regular season on the road at Midwest City.

“We all know what our schedule looks like but we are not looking ahead to any team,” he said. “We just take them one at a time.”
