Scores tumble with rough week on the lanes

I feel as if this week’s bowling article should read, “Just a note to let you know that no one bowled worth reporting last week so tune in next week in hopes for a better outcome.”

Seriously some of the lowest scoring I have had reported in a long time with a full league season on the floor.

I guess we will just blame it on the weather and keep trying because that’s what bowlers do.

In all fairness, we did have a couple of bowlers able to put together a decent set. One from Thunderbird and one from Twin Oaks and one from the left side of the lane and one from the right side so it just has to be that weather thing!

Congrats this week to Bill Cox who laid down a 704 series on games of 248, 210 and 246 in Thunderbird’s senior Entertainers league last Wednesday afternoon.

Following Mr. Cox on the high rollers list is Troy Hardin from the Suburban league at Twin Oaks, rolling 251, 224 and 226 for a 702.

Teri Jester led the ladies for high series with a 610 on games of 204, 182 and 224 from the senior Socialites while Zari Conway gets credit for the ladies high game of 237, posted in the Early Birds.

In fact, the men’s high game was also a product of the Early Birds as Michael Pierson rolled 103 pins over his average with a 289 game in the middle of his set.

Pierson went front ten strikes before leaving what he recalled as being either a 5-pin or an 8-pin to end his run, reported Gary Sammons, Early Birds Secretary.

The Early Birds league actually had the best overall report last week with Danny Carson putting in a 699 on games of 236, 253 and 210 and Craig Foster boasting a 692 that went 241, 208 and 243.

Seeing as we have the room, we would also like to brag about Mr. Charles Norman for a 276 game off a 156 average in the Suburban league and Rebekah Abernathy of the Friday Night Mixed Rollers for a 183 game off a 99 average.

We also would like to recognize Harry Shappell of the Golden Years league at Twin Oaks for a 235 game off a 136 average and we would like to welcome first season Goodyear Mixed bowlers Cameron Britton and Juantae Carnell to the bowling honor roll.

Britton posted a career high 606 series on games of 204, 167 and 235 and Carnell rolled a 600 series off a 150 average on games of 232, 168 and 200.

Youth

DJ Scott was the HotShot bowler of the week with a 414 series on games of 122, 166 and 126 and Peyton Smith topped the U18 Legends with a 596 series.

Smith had games of 173, 216 and 207.

The High School Bowling Program is in the works once again and bowlers are needed to represent some of the local high schools.

This program is of no cost to youth bowlers other than transportation to and from practice sessions.

In most cases, equipment is even provided at little to no cost to the bowlers. Interested individuals should contact Twin Oaks Bowling Center or Bill Kaplan for details.

No-Tap News

Gary Webster took first place in the weekly senior No-Tap at Thunderbird Lanes with an 891 handicap total that included a no-tap 300 game to kick off the festivities.

Barry Morris was a close second with 883 and John Fortner got third with 871.

Maria Garcia was the winner in the ladies division with 827, followed by Marianne Hartley with 769.

Scratch singles winners were John Fortner, 778, Barry Morris, 772 and Rick Olson, 763.

David Jones and Robert Lansberry took first place in both games one and three with 599 and 568 respectively, leaving game two for the team of Roy Johnson and Kevin Pair for their 579 total.

Rick Olson, Ken Knoff, Cleo Travis and Robert Lansberry managed a strike pot ticket win but Challenge Shot contenders left empty handed.

This event is held every Friday afternoon at Thunderbird Lanes; starting at 1PM. Bowlers must be at least 50 years old with a verifiable average to participate.

Po-Boy Mixed Doubles

Bowlers who have signed up and still need to pay the entry for the T-Bird Mixed Doubles, you have until 7pm this evening to do so. At press time the event was full with 24 teams but you never know when someone may have to drop.

Bowlers who would like to bowl and would like to be put on a waiting list should contact Ronnie King at Thunderbird Lanes.

The tournament is tomorrow evening, October 4th, at 7pm.

14th Annual PBA Regional

For the 14th year, Twin Oaks Bowling Center, Fort Sill, will be hosting the Southwest PBA Regional tournament slated for this coming Saturday and Sunday.

As always, a sweeper is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. where local bowlers can compete for a free entry into the event.

There will not be a pro-am this season but rather, for a $20 fee bowlers will be able to bowl a few games with their favorite professional and maybe pick up a pointer or two. This is new to the event this season.
