Six players score as Lady Owls rout McLoud

MCLOUD ­— Six different players scored goals Tuesday night as the Lady Owls soccer team swept past McLoud 6-1.

The win improved Elgin’s record to 2-1 after a disappointing 4-0 loss to Chickasha last Friday.

“We finally came together,” head coach Stevi Snare said. “They were getting their heads up and connecting on their passes instead of just kicking the ball, and they were communicating better with each other. It (the win) lightens the load and gives them needed confidence.”

Elgin took a 2-0 at halftime after goals by junior Sadie Garnett and sophomore Yarielis Cedeno Alvarado. The Lady Owls added second half goals from Annelis Perez, senior Joanie Kenny, junior Mikaela Scholl and senior Emma Rhinhart.

Elgin recorded 23 shots on goal while McLoud was held to four.

In Elgin’s season opening win against Cordell March 2, Alvarado tallied two goals including the game winner in the second half. Alvarado dribbled through three defenders and had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper before burying the ball in the back of the net to ensure Elgin of its 4-3 victory.

The Lady Owls took a quick 2-0 lead with Perez scoring the first goal of the game. However, Cordell scored three unanswered goals to lead 3-2. Kenny scored before halftime to knot the score at 3-3.

In the 4-0 loss to Chickasha, Elgin had only four shots on goal while the Fighting Chicks recorded 12.

Elgin begins district play at Noble Friday, March 10.

The Elgin soccer teams then take a week off for spring break before returning March 21 to host Guthrie. From there, the teams will compete in the Weatherford Tournament March 24-25.

Boys improve to 2-1

Meanwhile, the Owls defeated McLoud 3-0 on two goals from sophomore Luis Gil and another by freshman Donnie Jones.

The game, interrupted by lightning and heavy storms, lasted only until halftime when it was called because of the inclement weather.

Making his first start at the center forward position, Gil tallied his first goal about a minute into the game on shot from the right side of the 18-yard box. Gil scored again minutes later on a shot inside the box that found its way just under the crossbar from about 15 yards out.

Jones scored Elgin’s final goal of the game after receiving a through ball on a counterattack. The shot came from the right side of the goal just before halftime.

After losing 5-0 to Chickasha on March 3, head coach David Dittmeyer said he was happy to get back in the win column.

“It’s always nice. A win’s a win no matter how it happens,” he said. “We’re pretty young but we’re playing the right way. Against McLoud, we started a combined six freshmen and sophomores. We’re trying to get better each time we take the field whether it’s practice or a game.”

The Owls opened the season with a 3-0  win against Cordell before suffering its shutout loss to Chickasha.
