LAWTON — Elgin’s girls swim team finished in the runner-up position at the Area Championships held last Friday at Cameron University.
The team’s performance was highlighted by Ellie Stevenson’s record-breaking performance and second-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley. Stevenson swam the race with a time of 3:02.29.
Converted to yards, Stevenson swam the race in 2:44, which broke the old school record of 2:47. All other meets this season have used yards as the length of the individual races.
Stevenson also finished fourth in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:32.09.
“Overall, everyone did really well,” Elgin swim coach Corey Grochow said. “They came off the wall really hard and had good underwater performances.”
In addition, Elgin’s Josie Pearson finished second in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 32.77. Converted to yards, Pearson eclipsed her previous personal best of 29.87 with a 29.77.
Elgin also finished second in the 200-meter freestyle relay and wound up third in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
As a team, Elgin finished second with 84 points, while first-place Altus swept the meet with 159 points. Other teams in the meet were Duncan, Plainview, Marlow, Lawton Ike, Lawton Mac and Lawton High.
On the boys side, Elgin’s top performances came from Mason Thompson, who finished sixth in the 100-meter butterfly and fifth in the 200-meter freestyle.
The team finished sixth with 33 points.
Elgin swam in the Suburban Conference meet Thursday, but results were not available at press time. Elgin’s next meet will be the Class 5A regional Feb. 4 at Mitch Park YMCA in Edmond.
“I’m really excited for that meet because we’ll see how well the kids have done this year and how many will qualify for state,” Grochow said. “We’ve definitely improved over last year. We’ve grown the program, and we’re a lot more competitive.”
Last season, Elgin had 22 swimmers and this season, that number grew to 30, the coach said.
The top 24 swimmers in each event from the two regional meets will advance to the Feb. 17-19 state meet.
