ELGIN — Five Elgin varsity football players were named honorable mention to The Oklahoman newspaper’s All-State team.
The “deserving” players were running back Matt Lund, linemen Keith Ferguson and Jace Williams and linebackers Colyn Donnelly and Ritson Meyer. All five will return to the 2023 team.
“This is good recognition for them,” Elgin head coach Chalmer Wyatt said. “They are five deserving players who helped get us where we are. They all come back next year and that’s a good thing.”
Lund rushed for 1,438 yards and 13 touchdowns during the 2022 season while Meyer, a freshman, carried the ball 105 times for 820 yards and nine TDs. Lund missed one game with an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Donnelly had one interception that resulted in a 47-yard return for a touchdown.
Elgin finished the season with an 8-3 record after losing to Guthrie 17-0 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Owls started the season with six consecutive wins before losing to Noble. This was Elgin’s first year to play in 5A.
