STERLING – A four-run rally in the sixth inning fell short Tuesday as Calumet held off Sterling to capture an 11-8 win.
Trailing 11-4, Sterling used two singles, two Calumet errors, a fielder’s choice and two batters who were hit by pitches to score four runs. However, Sterling was unable to score any more in the seventh as Calumet sealed the win.
Calumet tallied five runs in the bottom of the first inning followed by a single run in the second and two more in the third to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The hosts scored three more in the bottom of the fifth to lead 11-4.
Sterling’s Jayden Huitt pitched one inning, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Relief pitcher Alec Jay hurled five innings allowing four earned runs on six hits.
In other games last week, Sterling defeated Sentinel 11-4 but lost to Amber-Pocasset 10-3 a day earlier. Sterling captured a 10-8 win over Lookeba-Sickles on Sept. 1.
In that game, Sterling had only six hits but scored at least two runs in each of the final four innings. Kayden Wilson, Riley Lile and Max Puccio each had two RBIs for the Tigers. Sterling also benefitted from 10 walks given up by Lookeba pitchers.
