CU softball sweeps Southeastern
DURANT— Cameron University women’s softball team showcased its prowess in a doubleheader against the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma, coming out on top in both games with strong performances from a multitude of players.
The Aggies triumphed 8-3 in Game 1 and overpowered their opponents, 16-11, in Game 2 on Tuesday as part of the regular season series.
Key hitters for Cameron included Payton Dickerson, Kelsey Creech, and Haley Gardella, alongside others such as Kaiden Boren and Kyndel McDaniel who were instrumental in racking up runs across both games. Boren, Kelsye Loughman, and Shiya Victoria each contributed significantly to the scoreboard, each hitting a home run.
Pitching also played a pivotal role in Cameron’s success. Tinley Schmidgal led the effort in Game 1, followed by Stormee Reed who took the mound in Game 2, both delivering crucial performances to secure wins for their team.
With this doubleheader sweep, Cameron’s record improves to 15-13. Looking ahead, the Aggies are set to face UT Tyler on Friday at McMahon Field in Cameron University. This upcoming encounter promises to be another fantastic opportunity for Cameron to continue their success in the current season.
OSU to play Sunday at SMU in NIT
Oklahoma State’s National Invitation Tournament journey will continue Sunday in Dallas with a second-round matchup against the SMU Mustangs on ESPN2. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
The fourth-seeded Cowboys (16-17) defeated Wichita State, 89-79, on Tuesday night to advance in the bracket. No. 1 seed SMU (24-10, 13-7 ACC) joined them in the Round of 16 following Wednesday’s 73-63 win over Northern Iowa.
The OSU-SMU winner will battle either No. 2 North Texas or No. 3 Arkansas State in next week’s quarterfinals.
The Cowboys haven’t officially faced SMU since the 2011-12 season but played a closed-door scrimmage at Moody Coliseum prior to the 2023-24 season. Last October, they hosted the Mustangs for a preseason charity scrimmage, winning 89-78 behind 24 points from Bryce Thompson.
OSU leads the all-time series 20-6 with 10 straight victories. The Cowboys are 8-3 against the Mustangs in Dallas.
Youth 3-on-3 set at Walters Center
WALTERS—The Brown Indian Baptist Church will be hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday at the Walters Comanche Nation Community Center.
The event is open to boys and girls age 10 to 18 with an entry fee of $20 per team. There is no pre-registration needed, just show up at 8 a.m. to enter.
There will be three age groups: 10-12; 13-14; and 15-18, with divisions for boys and girls.
