Aggie women get 4-0 tennis win

Cameron’s women’s tennis team had a strong effort Wednesday as the Aggies took a 4-0 sweep of Southwest Baptist at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

Josh Cobble’s Aggies demonstrated formidable performances in both singles and doubles competitions as they climbed to 3-3 on the season.

In doubles, the team of Anastasia Uspenskaia and Jenna Goessel contributed to the sweep by defeating Paula Ballesteros and Defne Ursane, 6-4.

Goessel also led the charge in singles, defeating Polina Paunova with scores of 6-0, 6-4. Additionally, LSC Player of the Week Martyna Jankowska continued her stellar run by overcoming Defne Ursane. 7-5, 6-1. Magda Wawrowska also turned in a dominant performance against Leticia Luiz, winning 6-1, 6-2, further extending the Aggies’ advantage.

“The ladies came out and took care of business from the start today,” Coach Cobble said. “Several of the matches had some challenges, but each time we stepped up and responded well. Really happy with how we competed today.”

Looking ahead, Cameron’s next action is Monday when No. 5-ranked Washburn comes to the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex at Cameron University. Cobble hopes that the momentum gained from the shutout will help provide a spark against Washburn.

Men’s tennis team falls

The Cameron men had their chances against Southwest Baptist, however, the Bearcats pulled out a 4-3 victory.

The teams completed a 3-3 deadlock in the singles but the Bearcats took the doubles point with a 2-1 win to seal the match.

Despite the loss, Cameron had some solid efforts as Pavel Kelo triumphed, 6-4, 6-2, against Bojan Radoman, and Vicente Preto, secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alejandro Bravo Diaz.

In doubles, Kristian Kubik and Lachlan Setina managed a 7-5 victory against the No. 23-ranked duo from Southwest Baptist, Juan Ignacio Morresi and Marcio Silva, highlighting a strong effort in doubles play.

Kubik won both his singles and doubles matches, marking his return to singles competition after more than a year away from competing in both.

Coach Josh Cobble expressed his disappointment post-match, highlighting the team’s failure to capitalize on key moments.

“This was a disappointing result for today,” Cobble said. “We had many opportunities to take the match and were unable to do our part on the court. We have to do a better job under pressure if we are going to be successful.”

Cameron men are eager to rebound from their 3-5 record as they host No. 5- ranked Washburn at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex Monday.

CU women fourth

in golf meet

Cameron’s women’s put together a strong performance at the Arkansas Collegiate, finishing fourth with a total score of 642 over two rounds at the challenging Mystic Creek Golf Club.

Leading the Aggies was Maria Savoca, who displayed consistency with back-to-back rounds of 77, finishing in fourth individually. Mollie Wheeler followed up with a strong effort, posting a total score of 164 to help solidify the team’s standing.

Head coach Tyler Kaman said that the Mystic Creek Golf Club is the most difficult course on the Epson Tour.

“I am super proud of the team and how hard they worked with it being such a difficult course,” Kaman said.

Cameron’s other scores were from Alexis Web, who carded a 173, Valentina Leyva Serrano had a 161 total and Malerie Nyberg who rounded out the team’s performance with a 163.

Baseball game-time changed for wind

Friday’s baseball game with Texas-Permian Basin has been changed to 7 p.m. due the forecast for winds that could gust up to 50 miles an hour.

Cameron is eager to get a chance to improve on its 5-15 record as Permian Basin comes in at 5-19 heading into the four-game series.

The teams will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. single game Sunday afternoon.
