The NAACP Branch 6131-B unveiled the Black Heritage Stamp Friday. The annual event took place at the NAACP Branch 6131-B headquarters on Washington Avenue.
“For a number of years now, the local NAACP Branch has celebrated the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) recognition of several outstanding African Americans from every walk of life, who have been nominated, selected, and honored by having their picture on a USPS Black Heritage Stamp for their contributions in shaping America’s history,” according to a press release about the event.
This year’s stamp was a portrait of New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint. Toussaint is the 48th Black American to be honored with a stamp in the Black Heritage Stamp series.
“The United States Postal Service is deeply honored to dedicate a stamp to the incomparable Allen Toussaint,” said Gary Barksdale, the Postal Inspection Service’s chief postal inspector, who served as the dedicating official. “His profound musical contributions have enriched the world with their soulful melodies and vibrant rhythms. The stamp serves as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary talent and enduring legacy,” said Barksdale at the dedication ceremony held in New Orleans.
“The people who are recognized with the Black heritage stamp, these people are changers. The things we can learn from these individuals include the method to change. We educate and then we agitate, those are the things that lead to change,” said NAACP Branch 6131-B President Will D. Scott Jr.
