As the Lawton Police Department readies to welcome a new crop of officers into the ranks, a new class of cadets are beginning their journey.
The Lawton Police Academy Class 2024-21 will ring the bell Friday outside the Public Safety Building, 100 S. Railroad, at 9 a.m. and will officially graduate during a ceremony at 10 a.m. at Lawton City Hall, 212 SW 9th.
The next class, 2025-22, began their training on Tuesday from the facilities at the Great Plains Technology Center. LPD Information Officer Lt. Charles Whittington said there are 12 cadets who began this week.
“Starting next week, cadets from other agencies will join them for the 23-week process,” he said. “The academy is the basic academy that is required to get their certification with the state of Oklahoma.”
That training includes both, classroom and practical training in everything from traffic stops to defensive tactics. Cadets will undergo firearms training, emergency vehicle operations, criminal and traffic law, first aid, human relations and ethics among the curriculum.
Whittington ask that if you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Lawton Police Officer call the LPD Training Division at 580-581-3569.
