The City Council will welcome its newest member Monday, during a special meeting.
The traditional swearing-in ceremony that marks the start of a new council term will begin at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of Lawton City Hall, Southwest 9th and C. The meeting is open to the public.
Taking their oaths of office from Municipal Judge Nathan Johnson will be two incumbents and a new member: Ward 2 Councilman-elect R.L. Smith. Smith, a realtor and retired Lawton police officer, bested four challengers to win the Ward 2 seat that has been held by Kelly Harris, who did not seek re-election. Also taking their new oaths of office will be Ward 1 Councilwoman Mary Ann Hankins and Mayor Stan Booker, beginning what will be their final terms.
Booker said he also will give a New Year’s address to residents.
City officials said a small reception, with light refreshments, will follow the meeting in the lobby behind the auditorium.
