Angelo State used four free throws in the final two minutes to rally for a 73-70 victory over Cameron Monday in the final home games of the year for CU men and women.
Cameron men also came up short, losing a 65-58 setback to the Rams in the second game of the Lone Star Conference doubleheader.
The CU women had taken a 70-67 lead over the Rambelles with 2:10 remaining on a short jumper by Shamika Smith. But the Rambelles pushed the ball downcourt quickly and Madi Lumsden sank a short-range shot to cut the CU lead to one, 70-69.
Cameron was trying to get into its offense but a turnover and subsequent foul on the Aggies sent Addy Burns to the line and she sank both free throws for a 71-70 ASU lead.
The Aggies were able to get the ball back on an ASU miss but another turnover gave ASU the ball and another foul sent Madeline Stephens to the line and she sank two more free throws to arrange the final score.
The Aggies had seven seconds to try and knot the score but they were unable to get off a shot.
Smith recorded a double-double with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 4 assists for CU and Kloe Heidebrecht scored 23 points. Grace Alverson scored 15 for the Aggies.
CU wraps up the first half of the season when the Aggies visit Oklahoma Christian for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.
In the men’s game the Aggies trailed much of the game but Lavell Brodnex was able to get inside and throw down a dunk with 8:54 remaining but ASU got the next two buckets and never gave up the lead down the stretch.
Jaxon Ingram recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, seven of those on the offensive end. Reggie Prudhomme added 10 points and Aaron Jacob chipped in 11.
