TIPTON—Tipton had little trouble reaching another state semifinal contest as the Tigers overwhelmed Welch, 46-0, Friday in a game that ended early with the mercy rule.
The Tigers are now 12-0 and headed toward a Class C semifinal contest on Dec. 6 against Tyrone at Woodward High School. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
The other semifinal will match Ryan against Timberlake the same night at 7 p.m. at Western Heights High School.
Head Coach Travis White and the Tigers did about everything well Friday with the only problems coming on extra points as the Tigers missed their first three PAT runs but still were in command, 18-0, as the defense was in complete control.
In fact, it was the defense that helped push the lead to 26-0 after Johnny Fernandez stepped in front of a Welch passing attempt and sailed 95 yards to paydirt, going right down the vistors’ sideline in the process. The Tigers finally got that 2-point PAT when JJ Jillia pushed the lead to 26-0 midway through the second quarter.
Roy Manriquez got the Tigers on the board in the first quarter when he scored on an 11-yard run.
Welch was unable to get much going on its next possession and this time Tipton struck through the air as quarterback Kaydence Sheffield threw a 40-yard touchdown strike to Dayton Stevens.
After Fernandez dazzled the hometown fans with his long pick-6, AJ Gay broke free on a 57-yard touchdown run and the Tigers were in firm command, stretching out the state’s longest win streak to 40 games and counting.
The Tipton defense dominated the entire game, giving up just a couple of chunk passing plays while stopping every run cold before the game ended early.
There is a good chance that the state title game might very well come down to a rematch between Tipton and Ryan after the Tigers earned a tough 28-26 victory when the two clubs met in a district battle earlier in the season.
That was the only close call this season for the Tigers but both teams still have semifinal games to win before any talk of a rematch.
