Some Lawton Public Schools fifth graders may never look at the American flag in quite the same way after a presentation by members of the MacArthur High School JROTC program.
Cadets are taking their Flags for Fifth Graders program to elementary schools on Lawton’s east side this month. During the presentation, students learn what each phrase of the Pledge of Allegiance means, how to salute the flag, how to properly display the flag and what each stripe means. Cadets also show students how to fold a flag, an activity the unit practiced for more than two weeks before the presentation.
“It’s important to our country that we understand these things,” said MHS 2nd Lt. Lillian Dove-Meyers, who commanded the unit during a recent presentation at Pioneer Park Elementary School. “As long as we have people who understand these things, we can maintain the ideals and foundation the country is based upon.”
Meyers said fifth graders were chosen because they are old enough to understand and grasp what the cadets are trying to teach them.
“We try to teach them how important it is to understand where our country came from and that we have a lot of freedoms, and to appreciate that,” Meyers said.
Pioneer Park student Emilia Garcia, 11, said she learned who made the flag and that the colors represent something. (Red stands for valor and bravery, white stands for purity and hope and blue stands for reverence to God and perseverance.)
At the end of the presentation, each student was given their own American flag.
Meyers said the presentations are part of community service projects for the JROTC program.
