Central Middle School (CMS) students will reap the rewards of their labors when they assemble 50 Thanksgiving baskets this week.
Students competed to see which hall in the school would collect the most food for the baskets, which will be given to families of CMS students. The eighth grade class won the food collection competition and will be rewarded with an outing to the Vaska on Friday to see a movie.
CMS faculty and staff provided the turkeys and students were asked to donate items such as canned vegetables, boxes of stuffing, cake mixes, soup and chicken broth for side dishes. Students will assemble in the library early this week to put the baskets together, then selected families will be asked to pick them up. Faculty and staff will deliver to those who are unable to pick up their items.
This is the second year the school has provided Thanksgiving baskets, according to Lora Miller, library media specialist.
Students Hannah Dermody and Kennedi Craig, Student Council members, said they were happy to help with the project.
“I feel like a lot of people will be grateful for the food we can provide,” Dermody said. “It shows that people actually care.” Dermody said she donated food items last year, but was not on Student Council. This will be her first time to assemble the baskets.
Craig, who has been a Student Council member for three years, said she was glad to help families and the community.
Any food left over from the baskets will be donated to the Lawton Food Bank, Miller said.
