Fort Sill Museums will host the annual Candlelight Stroll, an event inviting community members to experience Fort Sill’s history through a guided candlelight tour.
This year’s stroll will be from 5:30-9 p.m. Dec. 15, 2024, at the historic Old Post Quadrangle (OPQ).
The tour will lead visitors around the OPQ, where historical interpreters will bring the past to life, portraying figures such as U.S. Deputy Marshals, Buffalo Soldiers, Col. and Mrs. Grierson, Army chaplains and instructors from the first School of Fire. This immersive experience provides a rare look into the lives and legacies of those who shaped Fort Sill’s storied history.
Tickets are free and open to the public, but they must be claimed in advance at the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum’s visitor center, located at 435 Quanah Road, Fort Sill. Tickets will be available beginning Nov. 19 at 9 a.m.
The fast-paced walking tour involves navigating historic buildings with steep stone stairs and is not recommended for young children or those with mobility concerns.
“The story of Fort Sill reaches far beyond its gates. By looking at Fort Sill’s history, one cannot only get a glimpse into local history, but also the history of the state of Oklahoma and of the United States during Western Expansion,” Noelle Scarfone said, Fort Sill Lead Museum Curator. “This event gives members of the community an opportunity to see what daily life and the holidays were like for those on the Western frontier in the 1870’s.”
Visitors without a Department of Defense (DoD) ID must obtain a visitor pass from the Fort Sill Visitor Control Center at the Sheridan Gate. Guests are encouraged to allow extra time for this process and bring a valid photo ID. For more details on visitor access, please visit https://sill-www.army.mil/vcc/.
