As election results continue to roll in, Donald Trump has been named the presumptive President-Elect.
While both Lawton and the state of Oklahoma are reliably Republican — reactions in Lawton to news of the results have been mixed.
“I actually feel good, I voted for Trump,” said Carl Fuqua. He also voted down the ballot for differing parties, saying “I’m not a Democrat or Republican. I voted how I feel, so I voted for both sides.” Faqua stated that neither side has all the answers, so he votes for how he feels will benefit himself, his family and his business the most.
Fuqua, a father, stated that he viewed the Republican party as the party of the family unit. “The family unit is the best thing for our country, it makes people better. I think it’s best to have fathers in the household.”
In the days following the election, Faqua hopes that leaders will remember “It’s not a total win — they still have to listen to the people.”
On the other side of the coin, Kameron Howell, voted for Kamala Harris and Democrats through the rest of the ballot. “Obviously it’s not what I wanted. I don’t know how to feel about it really, it’s kind of disbelief,” he said. He also felt that the Democratic party didn’t have as many people show up to vote as in 2020.
Howell voted for Kamala Harris for reasons such as women’s health care and abortion. “Abortion, I believe that’s a right. Medical marijuana, I don’t want that to go away. The Department of Education, I believe that an uneducated population leads to more crime.”
Despite his disappointment with the results, Howell hopes that Trump will do a good job, advocate for peace around the globe, and do what is best for the American people.
