Mullins finally scores first 300 game

It is time to order some jewelry as Patrick Mullins achieved a long-awaited goal, scoring his first career perfect 300 game while bowling in the Suburban league at Twin Oaks Bowling Center this past Thursday evening. Mullins has been bowling for several years, and it was quite a surprise to learn that this was, in fact, his first perfect score. Mullins sandwiched his perfecto between games of 210 and 246, summing up a 756 series.

Since the USBC did away with awards for bowlers with multiple honors, it will be a pleasure for league secretary Jim Bomboy to dust off an awards form and get this bowler a 300 game ring for his achievement.

Second best, but oh so close this week, was Camden Sublett, who was denied the perfect score by a single pin left standing on his final throw while bowling in the TNT league at Thunderbird Lanes the week before last. The jury is still out on which pin was left, leaving Sublett with a 299 score, but the fact that the light shaker didn’t carry remains the same. Sublett started the night with the 11-in-a-row 299 and jumped right back in with a 268 score for game two. The good times quickly turned in game three, and a 199 went in the books to wrap up a nice 766 series, this week’s honor roll high set.

Sublett has one 300 game to his credit, posted in the TBird Legends youth league in August of 2018, but unfor-tunately, it was during a controversial time when the USBC did not award youth with special awards.

Following Sublett on the series list was last week’s headliner, Joseph Spires, who rang up a 760 set in the Sub-urban on games of 278, 244, and 238. Tying Spires was Jason Olnes with his version of a 760 coming from the Tuesday Night Mixed league, where he had games of 258, 265, and 237. Mullins’ 756 was a solid third highest, followed by Bill Kaplan with a 748 from the TNM on games of 257, 233, and 258. And in at number five and leading on the senior league front was Dale Perry of the Entertainers with games of 233, 256, and 258 for a 747.

Also in senior news, Teri Jester led the ladies with her efforts from the Socialites, where she rolled 199, 213, and 258.

Honorable mentions are from the TNM league, where Robert Balch earned century honors with a 258 game bowled off a 153 average. And to top it all off, Dave Yett slammed down, for lack of a better verb, the almost impossible 7-10 split. Yett said that this is the second time in his career that he accomplished this feat, but it was just as exciting this time.

Youth Bowling

Peyton Smith continued his reign at the top of the charts, posting a 643 this week on games of 223, 197 and 223 in the TBird Legends.

DJ Scott led in the TBird HotShot U12 group with a 428 where he had games of 150 and 169 before the bot-tom fell out in game three.

No-Tap News

Scott Brenke found his way to the top of the winners list with a 929 handicap set from the Senior No Tap Colo-rama at Thunderbird Lanes last Friday afternoon. Brenke neared a triplicate with no-tap scores of 253, 254, and 254. Sam Bowman finished second with 863, and Lee Brown took third with an 853.

Cathy Shuman rolled 209, 176, and 238 for the ladies’ high series of 815 with handicap, followed by Sue Avis, who was a distant second with 728.

Scratch singles winners were the same as in the handicap division, but in a different order. Bowman took first with 806, Brown came in second with 790, and Brenke fell into third with a 761. Mystery doubles winners were Bowman with Dan Bailey, 585; James Halstead with Tony Faustner, 566; and Scott Brenke teamed up with Kathy Zerbe to win game three with a 552.

Strike pot tickets were easy money, paying off to several bowlers able to strike on demand. Winners were James Middleton, Lee Brown, Rick Olson, Vanda Edmondson, and Scott Brenke. No worries though, as there was still quite a bit left on the table for next time, just as with the Special Challenge shots that went without a single winner for the first time in several weeks.

This event is held every Friday afternoon starting at 1 pm at Thunderbird Lanes and is open to all bowlers age 50 and above. The entry fee is just $15 per person and includes Mystery Doubles and Special Challenge tickets. Strike pot tickets and the scratch singles event are optional.
