We all know someone who has or have had Alzheimer’s. It could be your parents, grandparents, siblings, friends or even you. There are many ways to spread awareness and do something about it. One is right around the corner.
The Alzheimer’s Association is having their annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at 9:15 a.m. September 28 at Bentley Gardens at 2800 W. Gore Blvd. The Promise Garden ceremony and walk will begin at 10 a.m.
The Walk is the worlds largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support and research, according to a press release. Participants will honor the afflicted with the Promise Garden ceremony, a mission-focused experience uniting others in the fight against the disease. The colors of the Promise Garden flowers symbolize the participants’ connection to the disease and their personal reasons for walking.
“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s,” Sandi Pellow, Executive Director for the Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter said. “There are now treatments that can change the course of the disease. We hope that everyone in the community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”
Nearly 7 million Americans are living with the disease, a leading cause of death in the U.S., the release said. More than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Oklahoma alone, there are more than 70,500 people living with the disease and 108,000 unpaid caregivers.
