DUNCAN — A traffic stop followed by a high-speed escape from custody attempt led to the arrest of four after four large trash bags containing over 25 pounds of illegal marijuana was discovered.
On Monday, Amarion Deunte Knight, 20, Chadmaurion Niqwon Heath, 19, and Curtis James Williams, 18, all of Greenville, Texas; and Kameron Jones, 18, were charged in Stephens County District Court with felony counts of trafficking in illegal drugs – marijuana, records indicate. The crime is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine between $25,000 and $100,000.
Knight received an additional felony charge of endangering others while eluding police and Heath received a misdemeanor count of driving without a license.
The quartet were in a Chevrolet Tahoe with blacked out windows and a broken taillight driving recklessly from Pumpkin Center and nearly hitting several vehicles while on U.S. 81 on Sept. 5, according to the probable cause affidavit. Comanche Police Assistant Chief Terri Bruce stated a traffic stop was made and Heath was driving with an identification card only; the vehicle smelled strongly of marijuana.
Heath, Williams and Jones got out of the vehicle but Knight went from the rear passenger side and got into the driver’s seat where he accelerated away southbound, Bruce stated.
Knight continued on U.S. 81 into Jefferson County before Waurika police officers attempted to use stop sticks. Avoiding the sticks, he turned into the parking lot of a convenience store, spun out on the gravel in front of a tractor-trailer truck and came to a stop sideways in front of the gas pumps, the affidavit stated. Knight got out and took off running before he was caught and arrested.
A search of the SUV revealed four large trash bags and several smaller plastic bags containing a large amount of marijuana as well as several cell phones, a backpack containing several wadded up dollar bills, two laptops, and a loaded Glock magazine, according to the affidavit. No firearm was found.
Williams and Knight are each being held on $50,000 bond; Heath, $30,000 bond, and Jones’ bond was set at $25,000.
